Why I love pictures... | Durham Family Photographer

I have been working on a project for my mom's Christmas present. I took 250 of her favorite pictures from when my brother & I were kids and scanned them. I ordered black & white prints to hang on the wall and colored prints for an album. I can not wait to give this gift to her.

There really is nothing that I enjoy and value as much as photographs. Looking through our childhood pictures reminds me how loved we were as kids. My favorites are the shots that capture us being just the way we were. I think this is why I enjoy taking lifestyle portraits and candids.

Oh and it's safe to post this now. My mom is on vacation so she will not be on the internet until after the holidays.

Here is the album

A couple pages of pictures

I did some light retouching to these pictures, but I want to do more someday. Some of the pictures (like the ones below) were really showing their age.

This is a family favorite. That is me looking out the window & my brother looking back at me. My mom really caught a cute moment.

Another favorite. Don’t we look like an advertisement for lemonade?

I spent a lot of time hanging from things

I like the movement in this picture. We each had a pair of stilts, but I don’t think I ever got more than one step.

I love this one. This was the yard in front of our house. It looks like I stole my brother’s hat & ran off with it. I wonder why there wasn’t a second picture of me getting tackled.

Grrr…I hated socks & shoes

Looks like I thought that sheep was the coolest thing ever

I went to a preschool where we put on lots of plays. It was such a fun school.

My favorite part of the plays was talking into the mic. If a kid forgot their lines, I’d grab the mic & take over. I have always had a good memory, so I knew everyone’s lines. Finally they just gave me my own mic & let me MC the play. I really embarrassed my mom that night.

We could spend hours practicing our smiles.

This was when we played in a summer basketball league. My team was called the “Lady Bulls.” Not cows, but lady bulls.

Another picture from the most wonderful preschool ever.

I was sorting through our pictures one day & noticed several that stood out to me. I set them aside to ask mom who took them. She said that she had a nice camera for a while & took some photography classes. Here are some pictures from that time.

It’s a big day in the life of every little Texan when they get their first pair of boots.

I didn’t realize we were so country, but we have cowboy hats and boots in so many of our pictures.

Here we are at the county livestock show. The matching western outfits were only worn for special occasions like this. And yes, that is an “I Love My Pig” button I have on.

Rex looking pretty cool showing his pig.

We made those vests out of old jeans. I think they were in style or maybe I just looked silly.

I think that was Midnight VI

My favorite toy

We were heading to one of dad’s construction sites so mom said we had to wear hardhats. I think she just thought they were cute on us.

One of my favorite toys was a spiral staircase in our living room. Mom would block it off with blankets, but we liked the challenge.

When I take pictures of kids, I always hope that I can capture the moments that really show who they are. I noticed that in all 250 of our favorite pictures, only a few were posed.
